Earl R. Blanshan was born August 1, 1888 in Grayling, Michigan to parents William and Rachel
Krum Blanshan. He married Lucinda F. (Lulu) Billings (born December 1, 1888) on December 24, 1908
in Berrien, Michigan and they had four children.
In the 1910 federal census Earl listed his occupation as grading lumber in a yard in Boyne Ward 2,
Charlevoix County, Michigan. Earl is listed in the Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Michigan city directory
in 1918 working as an inspector at the B. H. Mall Foundry Company. He and Lulu resided at 545 9th St.
In the 1920 census Earl and Lulu were living in Pipestone, Berrien County, Michigan. Earl was a
farm laborer on a fruit farm. In 1930 Earl was a laborer on a general farm in Watervliet, Berrien
County, Michigan. In 1940, still in Watervliet, Earl was a coiler for a paper manufacturer. Agnes, age
29, was still living at home and working as farm help. Dora and Harold were still living at home as
well. Although Earl had only completed 2 years of high school and Lulu only the 8th grade, Agnes,
Dora and Harold had all finished high school.
Lulu died May 3, 1975 and Earl died on April 20, 1961 at age 72 in Watervliet, Berrien. He was buried
in Fairview Memorial Cemetery in Watervliet, Michigan.
The children of Earl R. and Lulu Billings Blanshan were:
Agnes - born in 1911, died in March, 1986 in Hartford, Van Buren, Michigan at age 75.
Earl W. - born July 27, 1914. He married Reva Arlene White in December, 1934. He enlisted in the Navy
on December 28, 1943 and was released November 14, 1945. He married Clara Virginia McGee (see
obituary below) and they had three children: Charles, James and Alice. Earl died February 11, 1994.
His last residence was listed as 35630 Florence, Lauderdale, Alabama.
Dora Ethelyn - born December 20, 1916. She married Walter Moser and they lived in Lawton, Van
Buren, Michigan. Dora died October 24, 1994 in PawPaw, Van Buren, Michigan. She is buried in
Fairview Cemetery, Watervliet Township, Berrien County, Michigan.
Nona Louise - born in 1920, died in October, 1980 in Hartford, Van Buren, Michigan. In 1940 Nona was
working as a maid in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Harold R. - born October 30, 1921, died May 3, 2007. He lived in Benton Harbor, Berrien, Michigan.

OBITUARY OF CLARA VIRGINIA BLANSHAN

Watervliet, Feb. 19 – Mrs. Clara Virginia Blanshan, aged 34, died this morning at 12:30 in the St.
Joseph Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.
The deceased was born on May 19, 1919 in Tennessee, the daughter of Earl W. and Ethel McGee,
who now live in Watervliet.
Besides her parents, and her husband, Earl W. Blanshan, the deceased is survived by three
children: Charles, James and Alice, all of this place. Two brothers James and J. B. McGee of
Watervliet also survive.
The body is at the Hutchins Funeral Home, where services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the
Rev. J. B. Harris, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, of which Mrs. Blanshan was a member,
