Mathew J. Blanshan was born January 14, 1847 to Jacob Smedes and Maria Travis
Blanshan. He married Mary A. Hermon, then when she died he married Ada Della
Anderson, born August 18, 1862 in Dodge County, Wisconsin to Albert and Clymena
Tubbs Anderson, in 1880. The family moved from Iowa to Minnesota between 1891 and
1897.
In the June 26, 1905 Minnesota State Census, Mathew and Ada were living in
Winnebago, Faribault County, Minnesota.  In the 1910 federal census, Mathew was age
63. He and Ada were living in Danville Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Also
listed in the household were May H., age 18, Albert M., age 12 and Gladys H., age 5.
May was born in Iowa, and Albert and Gladys in Minnesota. Mathew was a general
farmer. May was a student in high school.
 In 1916, Mathew is listed in a city directory as a barn man in Mankato. In a 1919 city
directory, he is a laborer in Mankato.
 In the 1920 census, Mathew was age 72 and living with Ada, age 57, in Shelby
Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Also living with them was Gladys, age 15 and
Ada’s mother Clymena, age 76. Mathew was managing a restaurant and Ada was the
assistant manager. Clymena is listed as having been born in New York to parents who
were also both born in New York. Mathew and Ada owned their home.
Matthew died January 4, 1929 in Paton, Greene County, Iowa at age 81. He is buried in
Junction Township Cemetery, Grand Junction Township.
In the 1934 and 1936 Mankato city directories, Ada, the widow of Mathew, was a
housekeeper who resided at 408 E. Jackson. Ada died April 14, 1936 in Faribault
County, Minnesota.

Alice Maude Blanshan - born May 25, 1874.

Mary Edith Blanshan - born June 12, 1876.

The children of Mathew and Ada Della Anderson Blanshan were:

Chester Ralph Blanshan - born September 8, 1880 in Grand Junction, Iowa. On August
9, 1903 he married Alvina Belle Buck, born March 29, 1876 in Rochester, Minnesota to
Willis Stickney and Alzora Celestine Buck. (See

Ada Mae Blanshan – born October 20, 1891 in Junction Township, Greene County,
Iowa. She married Royal Milo Colby on March 19, 1913 in Blue Earth County, MN.

Albert Matthew Blanshan - born August 9, 1897. He married Florence Anderson on
September 24, 1919. Albert died January 8, 1920 in Hennepin County.

Gladys H Blanshan Argraves – Gladys was born September 10, 1905.  Gladys married
Elliott Wellington Argraves, a teamster from Fort Dodge, Iowa. Elliott was born on
October 12, 1896 in Illinois. Elliott was the son of Dealice (Delia) Bermer, born about
1876 in Illlinois, and Laurence or Lawrence W Argraves, born in February, 1873  in Lee
County, Illinois. Lawrence and Dealice or Delia divorced at some point. Gladys and
Elliott were married in Wisconsin.  In the Mankato city directory of 1919, Elliot lived with
his dad in Mankato, Minnesota. In the 1920 federal census, Elliott was at home in
Shelby, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, with his father Lawrence, age 46, and brothers
Hobert D Argraves, age 21 and Scott W Argraves, age 16. Lawrence was a road
contractor and his sons were all laborers for him. In the 1923 Mason City, Iowa city
directory, Gladys and Elliott were living at 1452 North Washington and Elliott was listed
as a driver. In the January 1, 1925 Iowa census, Gladys is living with Elliott in
Wahkonsa, Webster County, Iowa. Their children were Lloyd Argraves, age 4 and
Emma J Argraves, age 1. By 1927, Gladys and Elliott were living at h1904 4th Ave S,
Fort Dodge, Iowa where Elliott was a laborer. By 1942, Elliott was 45 years old. He
registered for the draft and listed his address as Rt. 2, Rockford, Illinois. His next of kin’
s name was Florence “Flossie” Argraves, his sister. Elliott died on August 13,1982. His
death certificate was issued by the state of Iowa.
