RALPH (SLIM) JAY BLANSHAN
Ralph Jay Blanshan was born August 1, 1904 in Winnebago, Minnesota to Chester and
Belle (Buck) Blanshan. Chester's parents were Matthew J. and Ada (Anderson) Blanshan
and Belle's parents were Willis and Alzora (Richardson) Buck.     Slim had one half brother,
Harold Eugene "Dan" Daniels, born March 25, 1896, and four sisters:  Lila, born June 29,
1906; Alta, born August 20, 1908; Leora, born June 25, 1911; and Vera June, born June 21,
1918.
Slim was a tall man and very strong.  He did a lot of hard physical labor in his lifetime. After
he and Fern Pearson married in 1922, he worked for a transfer company, shoveled coal,
worked for Northern States Power, did construction work, and then did road work for Andy
Sheuer for 25 years.
Slim like to fish and hunt.  He also loved to watch baseball, especially the Minnesota
Twins.  At one time he was a catcher for the Minneapolis Millers.  He played the concertina
and the mouth harp.  Later in life when he wasn't working, you could find him in front of the
TV watching westerns. He was a genial man -- slow to anger, quick to laugh.
Fern and Slim loved traveling.  They spent several winters in Florida on the Keys with
Fern's Aunt Grace.  They bought a nice motorhome and took other trips out west too.
Fern and Slim had been married nearly 65 years when Slim died.  He died of emphysema
and pneumonia on August 27, 1987. He is buried in Minneopa Cemetery near Fern.
